Background of the Study
Wamba Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State has long been a region grappling with ethnic tensions and conflicts, primarily due to its diverse demographic composition. The area is home to various ethnic groups, and clashes over resources, land, and political power have often led to violent confrontations. Geopolitical strategies—ranging from local governance frameworks to regional interventions—have been deployed to address these conflicts. However, these strategies' effectiveness in managing ethnic conflict remains under-researched, particularly in the context of how such dynamics can be shaped or mitigated through political negotiations, security measures, and cultural dialogue (Olowu & Danjuma, 2024). This study aims to evaluate the geopolitical strategies employed in Wamba LGA, analyzing their successes and limitations in managing ethnic conflicts and fostering peaceful coexistence among the diverse groups.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Ethnic conflicts in Wamba LGA have resulted in significant loss of life, displacement, and socio-economic disruptions, with no lasting peace being achieved. The geopolitical strategies used by local, state, and federal actors, including the implementation of security operations, community-based conflict resolution, and inter-ethnic dialogue, have shown mixed results. The effectiveness of these strategies in mitigating ethnic tensions needs to be critically assessed to inform future interventions and policy developments.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the geopolitical strategies implemented to manage ethnic conflicts in Wamba LGA.

  • To assess the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing ethnic tensions and fostering peace.

  • To identify the factors influencing the success or failure of geopolitical strategies in Wamba LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What are the geopolitical strategies used to manage ethnic conflicts in Wamba LGA?

  • How effective have these strategies been in reducing ethnic violence and promoting peace?

  • What factors contribute to the success or failure of these strategies in Wamba LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical strategies have a significant impact on reducing ethnic conflicts in Wamba LGA.

  • Security and political negotiations are the most effective tools in managing ethnic conflict in Wamba.

  • Cultural and social dialogue contributes to the success of geopolitical strategies in conflict management in Wamba LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide an in-depth understanding of the role of geopolitical strategies in managing ethnic conflicts in a diverse region like Wamba. It will offer valuable insights for local governments, conflict resolution practitioners, and policy-makers seeking to develop more effective peacebuilding strategies in ethnically diverse areas (Olowu & Danjuma, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on ethnic conflicts in Wamba LGA, Nasarawa State, from the past decade. Limitations include challenges in accessing data due to the sensitive nature of ethnic conflict and potential security concerns in the region.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Strategies: The methods and policies employed by local, state, and national actors to influence political, social, and economic outcomes, particularly in conflict management.

  • Ethnic Conflicts: Disputes between different ethnic groups, often characterized by violence and competition over resources or political power.

  • Wamba Local Government Area: A region in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, marked by ethnic diversity and inter-group conflicts (Olowu & Danjuma, 2024).
